The Medical Genetics Laboratory at Dinogmi focuses in adult neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. The laboratory aims to identify the molecular defects and pathogenic mechanisms underlying inherited diseases and to propose targeted and effective therapeutic approaches. Our research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, Parkinsonisms, Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, motor neuron diseases, peripheral nervous system diseases and cerebrovascular diseases. These diseases are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the elderly population.
Research activity is organised through both pathology-specific and broader projects, the latter of which are aimed at studying the 'omics' of neurodegeneration (e.g. exome, genome and transcriptome) in an integrated manner with clinical, imaging and biomarker characterisation of patients enrolled in the studies.
The main project is the NeurOmics project (Omics Sciences for the Identification of Pathogenetic Mechanisms and Biomarkers in Neurodegenerative Diseases), which aims to influence current knowledge and technological capabilities in the analysis of omics sciences, from genome sequencing to the study of proteins. This will enable a more comprehensive characterisation of patients, combining omics/genomic and clinical data to significantly enhance the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
In the laboratory, the teaching activity is addressed to students belonging to different Degree Courses (Medicine and Surgery, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology) who carry out the training traineeship in order to obtain the Degree Diploma.
The lab is open to Postgraduate School of Medical Genetics students.
Finally, the laboratory is also home to students enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Neurosciences
