Research topics divided by Curriculum
ENDOCRINOLOGY AND DIABETOLOGY
In-depth study of new methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine-metabolic pathologies of developmental age, with particular regard to hypothalamic-pituitary diseases which affect the "Network" of the complex metabolic endocrine system, to midline pathologies associated with endocrinopathies and to various organ diseases including diabetes mellitus.
GENETICS
New knowledge on the human genome including investigations with new technologies; identification of disease genes, their mutations, their consequences in the disease mechanism at the molecular and cellular level and correlations with the clinical phenotype; identification of specific aspects of the pathogenetic mechanisms that may represent targets of therapeutic approaches; gene structure and control of gene expression.
MUSCLE, NEURODEGENERATIVE AND METABOLIC DISEASES OF DEVELOPMENTAL AGE
In-depth study of new methodologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neuropediatric pathologies of developmental age, with particular regard to neuromuscular diseases, neurodegenerative, neuro-metabolic and in general genetic-metabolic pathologies, and epilepsies of pediatric origin genetic and/or of possible neurosurgical interest, to defects of the neural tube and cortical migration and to neurofibromatosis.
The molecular and environmental factors of the development of the nervous system and the etiological and pathogenetic aspects of congenital hypotonias, primitive myopathies, spinal muscular atrophies, mitochondrial encephalopathies, leukoencephalopathies, epileptic encephalopathies and metabolic encephalopathies will be explored in depth.
FETO-PERINATAL AND PEDIATRIC PATHOLOGY
Malformative pathology isolated or inserted in syndromic pictures; pathology of the development and maturation of the fetus and the consequent adaptive capacities at the time of birth; placental pathology linked to preterm births and severe prematurities; fetal, neonatal and pediatric cardiovascular pathology; neonatal neurological damage; dysplastic and teratomatous pathology; neoplastic pathology.
PEDIATRIC RHEUMATOLOGY
In-depth study of new methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatological diseases in the pediatric field, with particular attention to Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and other autoimmune-based diseases and autoinflammatory syndromes.
PEDIATRIC SPECIALTIES
In-depth study of new methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric pathologies of medical or surgical relevance, with particular attention to the specialties present at the G. Gaslini Institute.
Expected employment and professional opportunities
The Research Doctorate prepares Doctoral Students to independently conduct research projects with employment opportunities in research laboratories, clinical research institutes and the biotechnology industry. Based on previous experience, it has been found that the majority of Doctors find placement in experimental and/or clinical research groups. Doctors who have obtained the title of Research Doctor in Pediatric Sciences starting from the conclusion of the XXIX cycle have obtained employment positions at research institutions and/or public or private hospitals, both on a fixed-term and permanent basis.
Educational activities
The teaching activities of the Doctorate involve the participation of Doctoral students in courses and/or seminars organized by the structures to which the various curricula belong and in events organized by the Scientific Direction of the IRCCS Istituto G. Gaslini within the scope of the research topics carried out.
The teaching plan includes:
Workshops on advanced research methodologies. Regular mentoring sessions to discuss progress and address challenges. Access to a large international collaboration network that enriches the learning experience.
