DURATION: 4 YEARS
ADMISSION: Admission to the Specialization School in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine follows current regulations as outlined in the annual call for applications to medical specialization schools.
Candidates are admitted according to the ranking list and in the following order:
- Ordinary positions funded by the Ministry
- Additional positions funded by the Region
- Additional positions funded by public institutions or entities
All admissions are subject to passing the entrance examination and receiving ministerial authorization.
TRAINING PROGRAMME: Each academic year consists of 60 CFU, for a total of 240 CFU, including lectures and practical training.
1st YEAR:
- Basic training activities (general disciplines): 3 CFU
- Core activities (clinical, diagnostic, emergency, specific disciplines): 57 CFU
2nd YEAR:
- Basic training activities: 2 CFU
- Core activities: 57 CFU
- Related and integrative activities (Human sciences and public health): 1 CFU
3rd YEAR:
- Core activities: 56 CFU
- Related and integrative activities (interdisciplinary integrations): 4 CFU
4th YEAR:
- Core activities: 40 CFU
- Other activities (language skills, IT and interpersonal skills): 5 CFU
- Final examination: 15 CFU
TRAINING OBJECTIVES:
Basic Objectives: The trainee must acquire: a) knowledge of physical and cognitive body functions in normal and pathological conditions; b) knowledge of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic procedures for functional alterations as defined by the WHO in the framework of disability; c) in-depth understanding of functional anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology, psychology, and neuropsychology; d) foundational and applied knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques specific to PRM using non-/semi-invasive and advanced technologies; e) understanding of pharmacological treatments and their interaction with disability; f) methodological and practical knowledge of human behavior measurement using both instrumental and psychometric techniques; g) understanding of healthcare regulations and service organization, and principles of communication, education, and media in healthcare; h) knowledge of research methodologies (quantitative and qualitative), with focus on experimental design and statistics; i) competencies in assessment and treatment of acute and chronic somatic pain using physical means and exercise; l) clinical management skills for disability related to surgical, neurological, or internal medicine conditions, especially chronic and progressive diseases; m) knowledge of disability epidemiology, healthcare planning, and organization of rehabilitation services for family, educational, and work integration.
Core Training Objectives: The trainee must develop the ability to:
- apply a holistic approach (biopsychosocial model based on ICF);
- work transdisciplinarily and interprofessionally, with a problem-solving and patient-centered approach;
- actively participate in designing individual and institutional rehabilitation programmes;
- pursue biological research on functional recovery and prevention of further disability;
- focus on recovery of autonomy using orthoses, prostheses, assistive devices, and advanced technologies;
- involve patients, educate caregivers, and support social inclusion, considering architectural barriers, home setting, and accessibility.
Related/Integrative Objectives: The trainee must understand the main causes of disability, enabling functional diagnosis, prognosis, and design of coherent rehabilitation projects and programmes. They must interpret clinical test results relevant to rehabilitation: clinical biochemistry, radiology, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, neurophysiology, and ultrasound. They must also evaluate neuropsychological and psychological-behavioral test outcomes.
