DURATION: 4 years
ADMISSION:
Admission to the Specialty School for medical residents is carried out in accordance with current regulations outlined in the annual call for admission to medical-surgical specialty schools.
Admission of successful candidates based on the ranking for different types of positions follows the order below:
Ordinary positions funded by the Ministry
Additional positions funded by the region
Additional positions funded by resources acquired from institutions or public entities
Admission to all of the above positions is subject to successful passing of the exam and specific ministerial authorization.
TRAINING PATH:
Includes professional activities with progressive clinical responsibility, active participation in seminars and courses, classroom teaching, clinical case discussions, attendance at facilities both inside and outside the training network in Italy and abroad, participation in writing scientific publications, and clinical research.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Basic educational objectives:
Acquire in-depth knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology related to the School’s specialty;
Knowledge necessary for epidemiological evaluation and clinical case management, including through IT systems;
Organization and management of health services according to recent guidelines, understanding principles of asepsis and antisepsis, and issues related to the organization and hygiene of operating rooms and surgical wards;
Acquire practical skills and experience necessary for a comprehensive clinical evaluation of patients; knowledge of medico-legal aspects related to the profession and laws/regulations governing healthcare;
The resident must also acquire the foundational knowledge necessary to organize and manage their ophthalmology practice based on the characteristics of the facilities in which they work.
Educational objectives specific to the School’s specialty:
Acquisition, through the common core curriculum, of fundamental knowledge relevant to the clinical examination and operative medicine;
Knowledge of parachirurgical equipment, surgical instruments, suture materials, as well as traditional and advanced parachirurgical and surgical techniques and methods;
Basic knowledge and practical experience to personally define and verify, based on comprehensive evaluation of the disease and patient, a correct diagnostic definition and indication of the most appropriate treatment considering risks, benefits, and outcomes for each individual patient;
Ability to plan, implement, and monitor rehabilitation pathways;
Ability to manage the immediate postoperative course and follow-up visits based on comprehensive evaluation of the disease and patient;
Ability to personally perform urgent surgical procedures;
Ability to integrate general formative activities with those specific to the School’s specialty;
Objectives also include those defined in the Scientific-Disciplinary Sector MED/30 Visual Apparatus Diseases: acquisition of theoretical, scientific, and professional knowledge for assistance activities in ophthalmology, both pediatric and adult; acquisition of skills in optics, pathophysiology, instrumental semiotics, clinical aspects, and treatment of visual apparatus diseases, including knowledge of parachirurgical and ophthalmic surgical techniques, advanced microsurgical methods, and reconstructive surgery;
Acquisition of specific skills in urgent ophthalmology;
Acquisition of specific skills in ocular traumatology.
