TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

Integrated training objectives (core curriculum): Trainees must acquire solid theoretical knowledge and professional competence in recognising and treating the most common pathologies in internal and developmental medicine, including emergency situations. CFU in the core curriculum of related specialisations must cover:

  • Theoretical knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system;
  • General theoretical knowledge of the pathogenesis of neurological and psychiatric diseases across the lifespan;
  • Basic theoretical and practical knowledge of diagnostic methodologies (clinical examination, imaging, electrophysiology, biochemical analysis, psychometric assessments);
  • Theoretical and clinical-practical knowledge of major neurological and psychiatric diseases, including their complications in internal medicine;
  • Theoretical and clinical-practical knowledge of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques for neurological and psychiatric disorders throughout life.

General training objectives:

  • Understanding of the ontogeny and structural organisation of the nervous system, as well as the function of the central and peripheral nervous systems and muscles in normal and pathological conditions;
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis, epidemiological methods, and data management skills;
  • Understanding of the biological basis of drug action, medico-legal and bioethical implications of pharmacological use, and mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, including molecular medicine and clinical neurochemistry.

Specialist training objectives: Trainees must acquire in-depth knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems and muscles, and their appropriate clinical management. They must:

  • Understand structural and functional alterations in the nervous system and their neuropathological correlates;
  • Master clinical methods, functional semiotics, and laboratory/instrumental diagnostics;
  • Develop a strong grasp of neurophysiology, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological profiles of neurological diseases across all ages;
  • Gain competence in developmental and geriatric neurology;
  • Acquire knowledge in emergency neurology, pain pathophysiology and treatment, clinical and molecular neurogenetics, disability diagnostics and recovery, neurorehabilitation, clinical neuropsychology, neurobiology, neuropathology of the CNS, muscle and nerve, and neuroimmunology.
